Unreleased Super Nintendo Spiritual Successor To Turrican 'Targa' Gets Reproduction Run & ROM Release

2122-super-nintendo-targa-rom-and-reproduction-cartridgesFollowing a long running series of action packed adventure with Turrican, developer Manfred Trenz seemed to almost disappear from the gaming industry entirely. While still knocking around in the shadows, Trenz’s Turrican swan song ended up arriving as an obscure Japanese exclusive Super Famicom title known as Rendering Ranger R2.

Although skipping out on a worldwide release, the title was ready to launch elsewhere under a new name, Targa. Featuring side-scrolling action similar to Turrican, and scrolling shooter stages drawing inspiration from R-Type, the game has since become a worthy, yet pricey, addition to any import gamer’s collection. As for the worldwide release, rumour has it though that no publisher was willing to take a gamble on the game, something which left Targa to become yet another unreleased title.

Late last year, however, a prototype copy of Targa made its way onto eBay ending with a final bid of 556EUR, ending up in the trusty hands of the Nolan brothers. Known for their on-going and generous efforts to preserve long lost video game code, the duo have yet again decided to distribute the game in a similar fashion to their last release, Bill’s Tomato Game on the Mega Drive.

Limited to just 150 copies, the Nolan brothers have begun shipping copies of the game out to those interested in owning a reproduction cartridge of Targa – playable on any Super Nintendo. With half of these still available, the duo have also stated that once sold out they will distribute the Super Nintendo ROM of Targa online for all to enjoy.

So if you’ve ever felt the Turrican series ended abruptly, now’s your chance to sample the series’ spiritual successor – and a great one at that.
