40 years of the Altair 8800 microcomputer

Make: Magazine has published in its last printed issue (3D Printers) and article about the Altair 8800, written by Forrest M. Mims III, one of the founders of MITS – Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, creator of the Altair.

Now the article is available online at Make website (link at the bottom) where you can read about the company that was created to manufacture a model rocket light flasher and later changing to a series of calculator kits and assembled models, before the tough Japanese competition almost made the company close its doors in 1974.

The article then shows the origins of the Altair project, and at the end, shows modern kits that can give you the taste of what used to be creating programs on that ancient machine.
