Virtual ][, an Apple II emulator for the MacOS platform that it is been around for more than a decade has released a new version 7.5.4.
Changes included in this new version:
- A new option allows forwarding all Command-key combinations to the virtual machine as “Open Apple” key combinations, instead of being handled by the emulator.
- Fixed an issue that could cause the application to not recognize the appropriate ROM file.
- Removed the “full screen mode” feature (temporarily due to technical reasons)
Virtual ][ is not open source or free but if you are serious about Apple II emulation on you Mac, the US$44 is totally worth! There is also a limited edition for US$19.
Vintage is The New Old reviewed Virtual ][ back in 2015 and we were truly impressed with the quality and fidelity of the emulator. You can check the review here.

If you are a Mac user and in need of an Apple II emulator that just works, this is a great choice. I think it is great there is a developer dedicated to Apple II emulation and he or she should get rewarded for it. Many people who play vintage games today likely do it from a hobby perspective but likely run Windows so AppleWin fits the bill.

AppleWin is indeed great. When on Windows I use it – At some point, I even helped with some changes in the disks dialog boxes! The nice thing of being open source.
I don’t understand why the Full Screen Mode was removed—that seems to make it LESS desirable as an emulation app.
Full screen allows for the feeling of “it’s exactly like sitting in from of my old Apple ][+”, while removing the feature makes it “I’m emulating my old Apple in a window on some of my screen…”
Hi Jack, I talked to Gerard and he told me that the removal of the full-screen mode is temporary. The method he was using to implement the full screen mode was deprecated by Apple, and because he wanted to release some bug fixes, he decided to disable the full screen temporarily. The good news is that it will be back soon! Cheers
That’s good to hear—I look forward to the updated version with the Full-Screen option re-enabled! :)
