CosmoScroll (ZX Spectrum Next)

 by Shrek128

A side-scrolling space shooter for the ZX Spectrum Next. Eight levels, four bosses, an armory to spend your score in, and a whole lot of bandits, mines and asteroids between you and the end.

CosmoScroll Next is a native Z80N port of CosmoScroll by Alexandre Bodelot, a PC game inspired by R-Type and Gradius. Everything has been rewritten in assembly for the Next’s hardware: Layer 2 backdrops, hardware sprites, a parallax starfield on the tilemap layer, and AY sound.

What you get

  • Eight levels with the original enemy waves, from open space to the mechanical corridors with their gates, cannons and gun towers
  • Four bosses: the Brain with its one weak eye, the Tentaculat and its waving tentacles, the Flying Saucer and its escorts, and Evil, whose face cracks and glows as you wear it down
  • Nine power-ups: repairs, shields, double and triple laser, speed, missiles and ice cubes to cool an overheating gun
  • An armory where your score becomes credits for better lasers, shields, engines, heatsinks and hulls
  • Three difficulty settings
  • High scores with names, saved to the SD card together with your progress and upgrades
  • A level select for every level you have reached
  • 50 Hz throughout, at 28 MHz
  • Chiptune soundtrack and sound effects on the AY chips
