Dawn of the Terrorbots is an action platformer for the ZX Spectrum 128K and ZX Spectrum Next. The game is set across ten space stations, each formed as a maze with rooms, ladders, and sealed doors. The stations are overtaken by Terrorbots and protected by a Warden located in the deepest room. A single failing power grid provides electricity for lights, doors, and weapons, requiring continuous management. Every action and shot depletes the limited power supply, affecting lighting and accessibility.
The stations include sectors like the foundry, hydroponics, reactor, cryo, and core. Players must decide which two circuits to keep online in each area — lights, doors, weapons, or turrets — and proceed by disabling each node before engaging the Warden. After defeating the Warden, an escape sequence is triggered where the player has to return to the entry before the timer expires.
The game features four types of weapons and three grenade types: explosive, flare, and EMP, the last of which disables bots but drains the sector’s power. Players can perform dash rolls, utilize traps, access terminals for shields and upgrades, and rescue trapped technicians. Wardens have specific attack patterns and advanced behaviors, while Terrorbots use knock-back and stomp attacks. Progress is tracked by score, high-score tables, and passwords are provided every five levels.
The ZX Spectrum Next version includes enhancements such as Layer 2 pixel-art backgrounds, real-time lighting, hardware sprites, advanced audio with three AY chips, effects, and the ability to save high scores to SD card.
