Retro Virtual Machine 2.1 emulator adds support for MSX, Colecovision, and more!

The last day of 2022 brought a massive update for the excellent (and beautiful) emulator Retro Virtual Machine. Known for its exquisite interface and great emulation experience, RVM was already my to-go emulator for the Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum. With the release of version 2.1, I can also use it to run MSX programs and games for the Colecovision, Sega Master System and SG-1000.

The emulator runs natively on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Apple-silicon Mac users can now count on native support.

Retro Virtual Machine has the concept of creating “machines” where you can have multiple emulated machines created with different configurations, including more than one of the same. This way, you could have, for example, a ZX Spectrum 48k with one type of configuration and another one with a different configuration. This is very handy when you need to change the emulator configuration often.

The Emul Window is another pleasure to see working. It has excellent animations and images of the machine you are emulating, giving a real-world feeling to the emulation experience. The UI is so user-friendly that it is a breeze to figure out where to click for the desired action.

Juan Carlos González Amestoy has also started a Development Blog, and he lays down his plans for 2023.

In addition to working on the debugger, we are also exploring other improvements and new features to include in future versions of RVM. We are committed to continuing to improve and evolve the emulator so that it remains one of the best options available for retro game fans.

There is no shortage of good emulators out there for all mainstream OSes, and Retro Virtual Machine is undoubtedly one to keep our eyes on!
