CC-Booster 33, redesign of the CPU accelerator card

I reverse engineered the Booster30-L33 from Interware and redesigned this card. It is compatible with ColorClassic (first revision) and LC II. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with LC (first revision).

*In my experiments, I was able to install the LCII ROM on the LC and operate it normally, and use all the functions, but unfortunately it did not boot with this card. I need to analyze the GAL a little more carefully, but at this point I need the help of a skilled programmer.

 The story behind

The trigger for making this card was that I had an accelerator that was installed in a Color Classic that I bought more than 20 years ago. My friend zigzagjoe (famous for 68KMLA), who I’ve been getting along with recently, made several Interware accelerators for the SE/30. I got one of his clone PCBs through some exchanges with him. He was a skilled guy. After assembling his PCB, I thought that maybe I could make an accelerator too. The reason is that at this time, I suddenly remembered the accelerator that was attached to my Color Classic that I had before. I searched in the warehouse and found a dusty accelerator card.

This card was my first 4-layer PCB. However, it was clear that the internal layers were only +5V and GND, so I was able to analyze it without using X-ray or anything like that.

It took about two weeks to make the first prototype. There was only one GAL chip and one other Motorola clock driver, so it was a little easier than other accelerators.

The most difficult part was getting the MC68030. I’m sorry, but I won’t tell you where I got it because someone might buy it up. However, it is a genuine NOS chip and it is unused. It has been checked up to 50MHz, and I was told that there was never an error in over 100 checks, so I bought it. The original clock was 25MHz, but it worked cool enough at 33MHz. A heat sink is attached to it just in case. It’s a great CPU.

This CC-Booster 33 accelerator does not require a driver. Just by attaching it to the PDS socket, it will automatically recognize and behave and operate as if it were genuine. The fact that no driver is required is quite important in a way, and even if you suddenly start up from a disk (disk image) with an OS that you do not normally use, you can still use the performance of this accelerator.

 

Benchmark results

If you install this CC-Booster 33 accelerator card to the Color Classic, you can get performance equivalent to the ColorClassic II. After all, the Color Classic is the last compact Mac, and the first and last color compact Mac.

Optional cards available

It’s quite fun to get good performance with the original Color Classic. This card can also be used with the great pizza box Mac LC II. We will ship it at a special price only for the first time.
