A visual catalogue for the games you own: boxed, loose or digital

I’ve been keeping track of my retro collection in a spreadsheet for years. It worked, but it was just rows of text. I wanted something more visual, with box art and descriptions, that also backed itself up to the cloud. So I made Retro Game Library.

Add a game, pick the system, and the box art, description, year and publisher fill themselves in. Your shelf ends up looking like a proper library instead of a spreadsheet.

What it does

  • Box art and descriptions are filled in automatically from the free LaunchBox Games Database. You don’t need LaunchBox installed.
  • It covers everything from the Atari 2600 and ZX Spectrum up to PS5 and Switch 2.  Everything will become retro at some point so I’ve included everything I could think of.
  • Physical and digital: record carts, tapes and discs as loose, boxed, complete in box or sealed. Record digital copies with the store you bought them from: GOG, Steam, Epic, PlayStation Store, eShop, Xbox, itch.io and more. You can filter to physical or digital only.
  • If you own a game on several machines, you add it once, tick the extra systems, and each one gets the right box art.
  • You can record multiple copies, and a filter shows duplicates, games on several systems, or games missing box art.
  • You can record condition, date acquired and your own notes.
  • Covers are saved to your computer as small pictures, so the app works offline.
  • Cloud backup: keep your library folder in Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud or Dropbox and every change is backed up automatically. It also keeps a dated backup copy for each day you make changes.
  • Export: a PDF catalogue with box art (handy on your phone when you’re out hunting at car boot sales), an Excel workbook, or a CSV.
  • It’s tiny (about 1–2 MB) and portable, with nothing to install. It runs from a USB stick.
  • There are no accounts, no tracking and no ads.

Important: Retro Game Library is only for cataloguing your collection. It isn’t a game launcher and is in no way a replacement for the brilliant LaunchBox. If you play games on PC, go and check it out at launchbox-app.com. Game information and box art come from the LaunchBox Games Database, built by the LaunchBox community. This app isn’t made by, or affiliated with, LaunchBox.
