Sheffield in 1983 was a city swamped in the gloom of recession with her trade and manufacturing industries withering in economic decline. Against this bleak outlook, the dawn of affordable home computers would lead two entrepreneurial retailers, Ian Stewart and Kevin Norburn to open a small shop on Carver Street.
Just Micro would become a mecca for a generation of teenage children who would provide the vine of creative talent that Stewart and Norburn would pick from to start their own software house called Gremlin Graphics.
“A Gremlin in the Works” charts Gremlin’s meteoric rise that would bring to life quintessential British gaming characters Monty Mole, Thing on a Spring, and Jack The Nipper in the 1980s; release ground-breaking series Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Premier Manager and Actua Soccer in the 1990s; and would spawn world-leading development talent that would shape an industry.
Through candid interviews, and first-hand anecdotes from legendary developers, famed business “suits” and a few long-suffering wives, the book delivers a fresh and in-depth perspective on a much-loved and unique British developer and is chock-full of never-before-seen archive material, screenshots and photographs – mostly recovered from Ian Stewart’s loft.
Estimated: Summer 2015.
