Secretly (or not-so-secretly), we’d guess that one of the ambitions harboured by most retro gaming fans is to own an arcade cabinet.
Real arcade cabs are pretty hefty pieces of equipment, difficult to come by, and expensive/difficult to maintain, making them an difficult proposition for the average household. Even replica cabinets can be prohibitively expensive, being seen as an ultra-niche product available only through specialist retailers.
That could be about to change, thanks to a new range of 3/4 size replica arcade cabinets from Arcade1Up.
Instead of being sold by arcade specialists, the ‘At Home Arcade’ cabinets will be available through a variety of mainstream retailers including Walmart and Best Buy (US and Canada), and EB Games in Australia – no word on European availability as yet!
Each unit contains a selection of classic arcade games, which includes hits such as Rampage, Galaxian, and even Street Fighter II (we expect this one to be popular!), all of which have been licensed from their respective owners.
With an MSRP of $399 USD, the ‘At Home Arcade’ units feature a 17″ LCD screen (sorry, no scan-lines!), manufacturer-approved marquee and cabinet artwork, robust joysticks and buttons, all built in a cabinet that stands 45.8″ (1.16 metres) tall.
Although the website FAQ indicates that the cabinets can be played standing up or sitting down, we would imagine that the 3/4 format favours the latter (unless you’re happy to stoop). For those who want to recreate the full stand-up gaming experience, it’s possible to boost the height of the unit to 57.8″ (1.47 metres) by fitting a riser kit – sold separately – to the base.
We should note that the cabs come in a flat-pack and do require self-assembly, but we’d wager that it’s still far easier to do this than trying to build your own MAME cabinet!
While it’s not possible to add your own games to the system, $399 does seem quite reasonable for something that’s sure to generate plenty of excitement when friends and relatives pop round.
