tl;dr A2Pico is here

From Oliver Schmidt:

A2Pico is a generic Apple II peripheral card based on the Raspberry Pi Pico. As of today there are already five different A2Pico firmwares available basically turning A2Pico into five different cards:

A ProDOS HDD emulation with access to the image files from your PC via USB

A softSP card emulation that makes your Disk II card work as a SmartPort card

An Appli-Card emulation that allows to run CP/M programs on your Apple II

An Apple2-IO-RPi variant that allows to connect the Linux RPi via USB

An Apple II Pi variant that allows to connect the Linux RPi via USB

…and there are for sure more firmwares to come soon.

Some background: Soon after the introduction of the Raspberry Pi Pico in 2021 Glenn and I started to experiment with directly connecting it to the Apple II slot bus. In 2022 I published a working Pico firmware on GitHub. Based on that we started to implement a prototype which I presented at KanasFest 2023. Considering the next steps I decided that my firmware should be accessible to the DIY community so I teamed up with Ralle to modify both hardware and firmware in order to allow for a simple through-hole design beside the SMD design.
