Wolfenstein 3D has been ported to the Commodore 64/128 (with SuperCPU)

CSDb (Commodore Scene Database) is our source of Commodore good news since 2011, and we are always getting surprised by what the Commodore scene is capable of.

This time the surprise came in 3D!  Wolf3D is a port of Wolfenstein 3D based on the original ID Software source code. The game requires a C64/C128 equipped with a SuperCPU v2 and 16MB of RAM. SuperCPU is a processor upgrade for the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 that uses the W65C816S 8/16 bit microprocessor and is equipped is 16MB of RAM.

The developer also highlights that for the port to work properly, some parts have been rewritten in 65816 Assembler for better performance.

That means the average Commodore 64 owner won’t be able to play the game using the actual machine unless you are one of the lucky owners of the SuperCPU. However, you can use VICE emulator fairly easy. The game README file gives the path to do so.

xscpu64.exe –reureusize 16384 +reuimagerw –reuimage wolf3d.reuautostartprgmode 1 -autostart loader.prg

The video below shows the game running in an actual C64 in 16 color mode. Enjoy!

Congratulations to the CSDb user known as AmiDog for this amazing accomplishment!

  1. Actually, the running game looks alot better, than in the posted screenshot picture here, when I run it in Denise or VICE emulators. The ingame video-quality can be changed in the game-settings and more colors can be used, compared to the screenshots here. SCPU and REU-RAM must be used in the emulators, of course.
