Matthew Clarke has been developing Top-Hole Golf, a very sophisticated Golf game for the Commodore 64 and he is keeping the source code already open, hosted on Gitlab.
At this point, the game is already playable and looks complete, with graphics and sound effects. There is no background music, but maybe that is a design choice, since golf matches are usually not very noisy, right!?
You can add up to four players, including a lot of customization, including gender, skin colour, and different clothes. To help with a single screen game session with friends, you can assign joystick 1 and 2 to any player.
The settings include the option with two gold courses, two gameplay types, and if you play 9 or 18 holes. In terms of difficulty level, you can set three different ones for rough soil and wind.
The gameplay is not different than your average golf game, with two gauges that you have to keep your eyes on and hit at the right time to get the perfect strength and direction. During the match, you can select different clubs that can behave differently, depending on the type of soil your ball is on.
You can play the game, downloading the latest release from Gitlab, and if you are a developer, you can try to build the assembler code yourself and maybe learn about Commodore 64 game development.
