Cosmic Hero 2: Prologue is now available for the Atari 8-bit | Download

Starting October 3, 2025, Atari 8-bit owners can download Cosmic Hero 2: Prologue—a free, self-contained mini-game and the long-awaited prelude to one of the most ambitious projects in today’s Atari XL/XE scene. Unveiled during the ZeroPage Homebrew livestream, it delivers a compact yet polished experience: 8 maps, 3 endings, and a 60–90 minute playtime.

Set in the 31st century, humanity relies on Lazium—an energy source harvested by remote AXON facilities. When transports fail and contact is lost, players must reach the nearest AXON, recover Lazium units (“Lazons”), and restore energy flow to avert societal collapse. Gameplay blends action and spatial puzzles: collect all Lazons, rotate conductive blocks to channel energy, and unlock new sectors—all while navigating broken passages, malfunctioning defenses, and hidden clues suggesting the AXON failure is no accident.

Powered by a custom high-performance engine, the game pushes the Atari 8-bit to its limits: 63×63-cell scrolling maps, full-screen colorful graphics, parallax effects, smooth 50 fps animation, and an atmospheric original soundtrack. Controls are intuitive—joystick (Port 1) or keyboard (emulator)—with the fire button (or Ctrl) activating energy flow near conductors. In Altirra, hold fire to reset a map; use Return for title screen, F9 to pause. Additional shortcuts: Shift+F5 (restart), Alt+Enter (fullscreen), Alt+F4 (exit).

Developed by the ZELAX team—Łukasz “Pazur” Pazera (design/graphics), Krzysztof “Święty” Święcicki (programming), Krzysztof “Foster” Bryła (music), and testers led by Tomasz Boksa—the prologue is a spiritual successor to Pazera’s 1993 game Cosmic Hero, re-released physically in 2022. Inspired by Sokoban and Polish classics like Robbo and Lasermania, it introduces unprecedented interaction depth for 8-bit hardware.

Playable on real Atari systems or emulators (Altirra 3.20 with PAL palette recommended), the prologue is free and serves as a preview of the full game—promising ~10 hours of gameplay, unique maps, and save functionality. Already honored as “Best Work in Progress” at the 2025 Atari Homebrew Awards, Cosmic Hero 2 marks a thrilling new era for retro innovation.
