HELHEIM – a saga of the north (SNESdev Game Jam 2026 edition)
The gods are gone. Now there is only you.
Helheim is a Norse action-RPG for the Super Nintendo, in the spirit of the dark isometric dungeon crawlers of the late 90s. The sea gave you back – half-drowned on the beach below Ulfsvik, with no memory of the night the raiders broke the peace of the gods on Lysøy. Lay Bersi’s drowned oarsmen to rest, wake Karr the Haugbui in his barrow, swear the oath ring’s trial in Nastrond – and carry the ring through the Iron Wood and up into the Trollfell, where Hrung the Bergbui has sat on Tyr’s stone for a hundred winters.
- A whole journey: the village of Ulfsvik, the Haugfield, the Barrow of Karr, the Frozen Halls, the Sunken Halls, Karr’s chamber, Nastrond, the Iron Wood, three levels of the Trollfell and the Troll’s Hall – plus the Hollow Mound and a Deeper Barrow to go back down into.
- About 30 minutes for the story alone, 40–60 minutes with everything.
- Bosses: Karr the Haugbui, Asgaut the Oathsworn, Hrafnhild the grave-witch, Atli the Oath-Breaker – and Hrung the Bergbui, a troll twice your size who slams the ground, throws rocks and calls his taken.
- Two heroes: the Berserker (Bear Strike, Wolf Leap, Battle Roar) and the Seidkona (Ember, Rime Ring, Seidr Step).
- Side quests: the Smith’s Boy, Ketil’s Amber, the Myling, Porridge for the Gardvord, Bersi’s boatswain, Tufte’s grave horn and the Hollow Mound. A gold ! shows who has something new to say.
- Levels with stat and skill points, a belt of mead, an inventory, magic, rare and unique items, a healer, a smith and a gambler, and rune stones that carry you.
- Story cards with pixel pictures, HDMA skies, drifting moons, flickering fire and falling snow; mosaic, ripple and iris transitions.
- 512 KB LoROM, no special chips, no SRAM – it runs on a real SNES (NTSC and PAL).
