Hugohunt is a new maze-type game released for the Commodore 16 (and Plus/4) and also for the C64, based on the game Hugojagd XL developed for the Atari.
The gameplay is simple to understand but very hard to play. You control the pac-man-looking hero around the maze, avoiding the enemies. Although they don’t move, they block you o get to certain parts of the maze where you can find a key or other gems. To overcome them you have to eat specific gems that give you the power to destroy (eat?) the monsters and move forward. You have to plan your path to use the power-ups wisely.
Another degree of difficulty is that while you walk, you lose energy that can be replenished by eating the rounded gems. Again, you have to plan ahead in order to not find yourself with no energy left.
The sound effects are competent and fit the game, but the intro music is a bit irritating – gladly it doesn’t play during the game itself.
The game is available as a free download in three different flavors (all in the same zip file). One for Commodore 64, another for Plus/4 and C16 and a thirds one tweaked to be played on a C64 emulator on smartphones, using a different keyset to move the hero around. Give it a try!
