Sky diving hey…who doesn’t love the adrenaline rush of jumping out of a plane and hurtling down towards the earth at a brain busting speed…well chickens like me for a start, that’s who. Fortunately, David Asenjo (aka Darro) has allowed me to experience the virtual thrills of this death defying sport with the release of the game Sky Diving for the Commodore 64.
Darro’s Sky Diving provides a fast paced casual game style that sees you trying to accumulate as many points possible as you navigate your sky diver down to Earth while at the same time avoiding other crazy divers who have no respect for your personal space and collecting balloons for bonus points.
The game controls are simple, use the joystick to maneuver your diver, press the fire button to accelerate the diver’s speed down and hit the space bar before the timer reaches zero to deploy the parachute.
Sky Diving features 10 jumps (i.e. levels) with the last two jumps only accessible as long as you have not accumulated too much extra time (the time left on the counter when you deploy your parachute). For each jump you are given 5 helmets (i.e. lives) which you lose one of every time you collide with another diver.
The game starts off at an easy pace and its not too difficult to get past the first two jumps successfully. It is at the third jump when things really do speed up. Not only do you have other divers throttling in at you from above and below, acrobatic divers start to exhibit the amazing ability to hone in on you by coming in from the sides of the screen and in collective swarms, making your task of avoiding them challenging.
Your diver flashes temporarily every time you lose a life but this is easy to miss among all the frantic action and I would have like to have had some sort of sonic indicator to help me keep track of how many lives I had left when playing as keeping your eyes off the action for a split second can result in a collision.
In developing Sky Diving, Darro has collaborated with Igor Errazking (graphics) and Uctumi (Music) to produce a game that moves along very well while being backed up with a high quality soundtrack that suits the adrenaline nature of the action very well.
Sky Diving is a very good title for the casual gaming genre. It is fun to play in short spurts or as a party game. The difficulty setting is at the right level and will have gamers coming back to it time after time to complete all the challenges on hand. Great Job Darro.
