The Mega65 (a C64/C65 compatible computer) team has announced on its website a new version of the DevKit, which is a version of the Mega65 aimed for developers to create programs for the machine and make them ready for when the final product is released.
The board was lowered to leave more room for cables and programmers which required for backplanes and side pieces. Now everything fits perfectly even if you wish to keep the FGPA proggers attached forever. This time we also removed the top of the floppy drive for a very geeky look
The short announcement presents a photo of the kit and also a video showing it playing Sam’s Journey. At the end of the article, a very good FAQ was created to help clarify any questions about the devkit. In a nutshell:
- The DevKit is aimed at developers, but it is a very collectable item due to the low number of units and the way it looks. Anyone will be able to buy it, even if you are not a developer;
- Following the same idea, anyone can use it as a computer to play games, but there will be bugs or issues, which can be fixed via software updates;
- It will most probably cost under EUR 1.000 but more than the final machines;
- The Devkit will be sold in kit form, so the buyer has to assemble it or have someone knowledgeable to do it; The Mega65 team won’t sell pre-built DevKits
- The availability is planned for the summer of 2020;
- It is likely possible to move the DevKit to the final case after is released;
