MSXdev ’21 – The traditional MSX game development competition has started

2021 has barely started, but the MSX game developers out there have no time to rest. The MSXDev’21 has been announced and will run from January 1st through October 15th.

Last year, the compo went back to its roots and decided to allow only pure MSX1 games to compete. The change was very successful, and nothing less than 21 new MSX games were brought to life. In 2021 the recipe will stay the same: create a new MSX game that should have the following specs:

  • CPU: Zilog Z80 running at 3.58 Mhz
  • VDP: TMS9918/TMS9928 or compatible video processor
  • PSG: AY-3-8910 or compatible sound chip
  • Cassette interface: 1200/2400 baud
  • RAM: 16KB (non-memory-mapped)
  • VRAM: 16KB

To make sure you have your calendar straight, here is the competition schedule:

  • Start: January 1st, 2021
  • Deadline to submit your entry: August 31st, 2021
  • Jury deliberation: September 1st, 2021
  • Deadline for jury reports: September 30th, 2021
  • Final results made public: October 15th, 2021

The organizers are once more asking for donations via Paypal so they can give the winners money prizes. Besides, anyone interested in sponsor a special prize can contact them for details.
