Derek Morris has published his 2nd RetroGameDev book, a guide that will teach you how to develop games for the Commodore 64.
This second volume will include more advanced techniques including:
- VS Code & Kick Assembler
- Debugging & Profiling
- Raster Interrupts
- Sprite Multiplexing
- SpritePad & CharPad
- SID Chip Music Playing
- Assembly Game Coding
- Multi-Screen Handling
The first book presented a lot of information about game development for the C64 in only 130 pages. This could be only achieved with the use of a library that would hide many of the complex aspects of programming assembler for the C64. This way, the less experienced reader could be up and running faster and then improve their knowledge later on.
The strategy worked very well and Derek decided that Volume 2 would follow the same idea, but this time he is also including the full library commented on a reference section at the end of the book.
Another change for this book is to explain all topics using a single larger multi-screen game, so at the end of the book, the reader will have a more complex game completed that can be modified and improved further.
There is also a companion website with a forum that can showcase your creations or ask questions about the book.
RetroGameDev Volume 2 is available at Amazon, in print or Kindle digital format.
