Back in 1990, Rebecca bought a copy of the game released by ReadySoft and didn’t like the fact the port was only for ProDOS, requiring you to play the game on floppy disks – a terrible experience considering Space Ace is similar to Dragon’s Lair. Instead of accept the flaw, she decided disassemble the game and converted it back into source code. Then she re-wrote it using the Apple IIgs hard disk, updating all file management functions to use GS/OS instead. I have to give her that, she had shown amazing skills accomplishing that!
The source code on Github can be easily built using Brutal Deluxe a65816 assembler with help of some Python scripts she added to the project. She states that she was able to build the game on Mac OSX and run it using Sweet16 on Mac, and Kegs on Windows.
Rebecca is responsible for games such as The Bard’s Tale III: The Thief of Fate, Dragon Wars, Tass Times in ToneTown, Borrowed Time, Mindshadow, The Tracer Sanction, Out of This World SNES and dozens of Macintosh and Apple IIgs conversions. You can follow her on Twitter at @burgerbecky.
